Negative SEO: How to Spot It and Shut It Down

Spammy backlinks, scraped content, and fake GMB attacks — defense playbooks.

Negative SEO exists. It is rare, but it is real. Here’s how to spot it and shut it down.

The four attack types

  1. Toxic backlinks. Thousands of spammy links pointing at your site.
  2. Content scraping. Your content republished across hundreds of low-quality domains.
  3. Fake GMB listings. Sabotaging your Google Business Profile with fake reviews or wrong info.
  4. Click fraud. Bots clicking your paid ads to drain your budget.

Detection

  • Backlink profile sudden spike in spammy domains → Ahrefs/Semrush alert.
  • Sudden drop in organic traffic → Search Console anomaly check.
  • Search for unique sentences from your content in quotes.
  • GBP notifications for changes you didn’t make.

Defense

  1. Backlinks: Disavow file via Search Console. Document with screenshots. Submit to Google.
  2. Scraped content: File DMCA takedowns. Use Copyscape. Set up Google Alerts for unique sentences.
  3. Fake GBP: Report via GBP dashboard. Edit your own listing to correct sabotage.
  4. Click fraud: Set IP exclusions in Google Ads. Use automated click fraud detection.

How common is it?

Less than 0.1% of sites experience negative SEO. But when it happens, it is brutal. Audit your backlink profile monthly. Set up alerts for traffic anomalies. Most attackers give up if you respond quickly.

The trap

Don’t panic at every traffic dip. Algorithm updates, seasonality, and tracking issues are 1000x more common than negative SEO. Confirm before you respond.
