Voice Search SEO: Still Worth It?
The data on voice queries, the queries worth chasing, and the queries to ignore.
SEOKit24 Editorial7 min read
Voice queries represent 25%+ of all searches. They are also a wildly different query distribution. Should you optimize? Probably not the way you think.
The data
- Voice queries are 8x more likely to be question-based.
- Average voice query: 29 words.
- Top voice results: featured snippets.
- Local intent: 22% of voice queries have local intent.
What voice is actually doing
Voice assistants read featured snippets. They do not return “voice-optimized” pages — they return Google’s regular SERP, formatted for voice. So optimizing for voice = optimizing for featured snippets.
The 2026 reality check
The voice SEO hype peaked in 2018. Five years later, the data shows:
- Voice converts worse than typed search.
- Voice commerce is dominated by Amazon, not Google.
- Local “near me” queries are the highest-value voice intent.
What to do
- Write in natural language — match how people actually speak.
- Answer questions directly above the fold (40–60 words).
- Target FAQ rich results with FAQPage schema.
- For local businesses: optimize GBP and NAP consistency.
What not to do
Don’t write separate “voice-optimized” pages. Don’t stuff schema. Don’t target voice keywords specifically. Optimize for featured snippets — voice will follow.
