Content Strategy: Topical Authority From Scratch

Build a content graph Google trusts — pillar pages, clusters, internal links, and decay management.

Topical authority is the structural SEO advantage that compounds. A site that covers a niche exhaustively ranks for queries it has never explicitly targeted — because Google’s entity graph says “this site knows this topic”. This guide is the workflow to build that graph from scratch.

What topical authority actually is

Topical authority is a measure of how exhaustively your site covers a topic. It is not a metric you submit to Google. It is the emergent property of three signals:

  1. Coverage. You have content for every meaningful sub-topic in the niche.
  2. Depth. Each piece is substantial, not thin.
  3. Internal graph. Pieces are linked in a way that signals relationships.

Step 1: Pick the niche

One niche. Not three. The site that ranks for “SEO for dentists” outranks the site that tries to rank for “SEO, paid ads, and email marketing”. Topical authority is local — within a niche.

The niche check:

  • Can you list 100 distinct sub-topics?
  • Are there at least 5,000 monthly searches in the niche?
  • Can you write authoritatively for 5 years without running out?

Step 2: Map the topic graph

List every sub-topic. Cluster them by SERP overlap (the Jaccard method from our keyword research guide). Each cluster becomes one page. Group clusters into pillars — five to eight pillars covers most niches.

Step 3: The pillar pages

A pillar is the canonical, comprehensive piece on a broad topic. Properties:

  • 3,000–6,000 words.
  • Updated annually (and the date updated is visible).
  • Cites primary sources (research papers, government data, official docs).
  • Has an author byline with credentials.
  • Links to every spoke in the cluster.

A pillar is the hub. Spokes are the spokes. The spoke pages link back to the pillar. The pillar is never orphaned.

Step 4: The spoke pages

Spokes answer specific questions in depth. Properties:

  • 1,500–2,500 words.
  • One clear question answered.
  • Two to four contextual internal links (one back to the pillar, three to siblings).
  • Original visual or example.
  • Updated only when the answer changes.

Publication cadence: two spokes per week is the minimum for compounding. Below that, the graph grows too slowly for Google to register momentum.

Internal links are how you tell Google “this is the relationship between these two topics”. A page that links to 30 siblings with descriptive anchor text signals cluster membership more strongly than any schema type.

The graph pattern:

  • Pillar → spoke (descriptive anchor).
  • Spoke → pillar (topical anchor).
  • Spoke → spoke (related sub-topic anchor).
  • Pillar → pillar (cross-cluster only when genuinely related).

Step 6: Decay management

A piece of content decays. Statistics age, examples rot, recommendations shift. The decay workflow:

  1. Every quarter, pull Search Console performance per URL.
  2. Flag pages where position has dropped ≥3 spots or impressions have halved.
  3. Open each. Update stats. Add a “2026 update” section if needed.
  4. Re-publish with a visible updated date.
  5. Request indexing.

What “topical authority” is not

  • It is not word count.
  • It is not pillar page count.
  • It is not the number of internal links.
  • It is not a Google-recognized score you can game.

Wrap-up

Topical authority is the highest-leverage long-term SEO strategy. Six months of consistent cluster-building compounds into rankings you could not buy. The trap is impatience — authority takes 12–24 months to mature, and most teams give up at month 6.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Pick the niche

One niche. Not three. The site that ranks for "SEO for dentists" outranks the site that ranks for "SEO, paid ads, and email".

  2. 2

    Map the topic graph

List every sub-topic. Cluster them. Pick 5–8 pillar topics.

  3. 3

    Write the pillar

Pillars are 3,000–6,000 words. Comprehensive. Updated annually. The hub every spoke points to.

  4. 4

    Write the spokes

Spokes are 1,500–2,500 words. Specific. Interlinked. Published 2 per week.

  5. 5

    Decay-manage

Every 6 months, refresh the underperforming posts. Update stats. Add new sections. Republish.
